So Much Litter... So Little Time

Although Saturday morning was rainy, a small but mighty band of Savers gathered at the Lehigh Canal Park - Weissport pavilion to pick up litter as part of the annual Pick-up the Poconos event. In only 90 minutes we collected 8 Hefty bags filled with broken glass, discarded beer cans, cigarette butts, candy wrappers, trash, and scrap metal. We also retrieved 11 tires! Littering tires in forests is a problem that creates environmental, health, and safety hazards. When tires are illegally dumped, they can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leach toxic chemicals into the soil and water, and pose a fire risk. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection addresses this issue through its Waste Tire Program, and Keep PA Beautiful focuses on littering and illegal dumping prevention and enforcement. More information on dumping tires is available here. Thank you to everyone who joined us!
