One Nation under God, indivisible

Carbon County is one of the 67 counties in Pennsylvania and one of over 3,100 counties in the United States. Yet we share many of the same concerns and threats to our way of life, which is why we are grateful for those people who bravely voice their concerns about the unchecked proliferation of artificial intelligence and data centers. People like residents in Lackawanna County, who recently packed a township supervisors meeting in opposition to the proposed development of a data center there. People like residents of Hood County, Texas, whose lives have changed tragically after Marathon built a data center there, and yet continue to fight (video link here). People like elected officials and legislators who speak out about the potential for straining water resources and devastating environmental consequences. We are one nation, indivisible, and must continue to stand firm, united against the unchecked expansion of data centers.

Save Carbon County is a non-profit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to making our county a better place today and for future generations. The recent plans to renovate Panther Creek Power into a data center for Bitcoin mining, along with the permit to burn shredded tires, is a concern to all of us who enjoy the scenic beauty of our county and rely on the Lehigh River for our source of water, income, recreation, peace of mind and general enjoyment.

Our next meeting is on Monday, August 11th, at 6:30pm, and we invite you to join us in addressing 400 postcards that alert residents living near Panther Creek Power to the permit approval and what they can do to protect themselves. If you can join us, please call us at 570-676-2644 and leave a message. We will call you back with the details.

More information on how municipalities can mitigate the environmental harm from data centers is available at https://www.pennfuture.org/datacenters.
