The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA-DEP) recently approved tire burning at Panther Creek Power. This is the first time the permit was approved since applications began over 25 years ago in 1997. Burning tires releases toxic pollutants and cancer-causing fumes into the air, soil, and water. When tires are burned, known carcinogens like polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxins are released into the air. What can we do? If you SMELL SOMETHING SAY SOMETHING! Call the PA-DEP to report the odor of burning tires at 866-255-5158. Then call Save Carbon County at 570-676-2644. Please leave a message so that we can monitor air quality and track the complaints in our region. Thanks to Save Carbon County member donations and a grant, real-time air quality monitoring in Carbon County is available for FREE 24x7 via the Purple Air online map.
Our gratitude to BRC13 for their brave coverage of this situation. Let's stay strong!
